Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791)
“Turkish March” is best known as the third movement of Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart around 1783 during his Vienna period. It is often performed as an independent piece and remains one of Mozart’s most beloved and frequently played works.
The subtitle “Alla Turca” (“in the Turkish style”) reflects the 18th-century European fascination with Turquerie—a fashion inspired by the Ottoman Empire. At the time, the lively rhythms and percussive sounds of the Ottoman military band (Janissaries) captivated audiences, and many composers sought to imitate that exotic character. In this movement, the light staccato rhythms and octave patterns in the bass evoke the sound of drums and cymbals, creating a vivid, percussive energy.
Formally, the movement is a rondo, with a cheerful and memorable theme returning throughout the piece. Moments of minor-key modulation add emotional depth, giving the music a touch of contrast beyond its playful surface.
Brilliant yet refined, virtuosic yet full of humor, the “Turkish March” stands as a perfect example of Mozart’s multifaceted genius and his ability to blend elegance with spirited charm.
In addition to following the flow of the original piece, this arrangement includes several newly added sections with original ideas at key points. Bringing out the distinct character of each section will help create a strong sense of contrast and dynamism.
