Composed by Vittorio Monti (1868–1922)
Composed in 1904 by the Italian composer and violinist Vittorio Monti, Csárdás is a celebrated piece based on the traditional Hungarian folk dance of the same name. Originally written for violin and piano (though some sources suggest it was first conceived for mandolin), its captivating melody and dazzling virtuosity have made it a favorite among performers of all instruments, including saxophone, flute, and clarinet.
The piece consists of two contrasting sections: the slow and expressive lassú and the lively, energetic friss. In the first part, a wistful, lyrical melody unfolds with emotional depth, while the second bursts forth with rapid tempos and brilliant technical passages.
More than a mere display of virtuosity, Csárdás intertwines passion and longing through its flexible tempo and expressive nuances. For performers, it offers the joy of freedom and excitement; for listeners, it delivers an overwhelming sense of vitality and exhilaration.
